Slaughterhouses

The department of Veterinary Affairs manages two slaughterhouses. One located in the center part of the island and the other at the western part of the island. A well-executed slaughtering process requires two important components being hygiene and animal welfare.

Proper hygiene is determined through implementation of standardized operating procedures to achieve a hygienic environment, well maintained infrastructures, laboratory verified sanitation, continuously educated and instructed personnel as well as well-informed farmers.

Unnecessary stress for the animals should be avoided at all times, by maintaining animal welfare standards. For instance by responsible animal farming, implementing animal friendly transportation methods, adequate resting times before slaughter and humane stunning methods.
